A former staff developer and Coordinator of Administrator and Peer Mediation Training for the nationally-recognized Resolving Conflict Creatively Program in New York City, Dr. Tobin has coached or trained thousands of principals, teachers, parents and student mediators in social emotional skills. As a curriculum writer, he has written materials for such publishers as Harcourt Brace, Macmillan, and Scholastic, produced curricula for adult learners in the workplace, and served on the planning and advisory committee for the video series, Talk It Out to Work It Out (Soup to Nuts Productions, 1997). He is also the coauthor of Smart School Leaders: Leading with Emotional Intelligence (Kendall Hunt Publishing, 2003) which Daniel Goleman said “offers an elegant and practical program for leading schools with heart…” His most recent publication is “Emotionally Smart School Counselors: A school district's initiative to create emotionally intelligent schools” in J. Pellitteri et al, Emotionally Intelligent School Counseling, Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, 2006.

James Tobin is a consultant specializing in leadership coaching, social emotional learning, conflict management and organizational change. He has worked with school systems throughout the United States and in the Netherlands. He currently teaches at Ramapo College of New Jersey but has also taught at Hunter College and Adelphi, Hampton and New York Universities.
